Ocean distribution of Atlantic salmon                                       mapped using pop-up satellite tags

Jóhannes Sturlaugsson

In June 2021 the paper „Redefining the oceanic distribution of Atlantic salmon" was published in  Nature Scientific Reports. Based on the main findings of a international study led by Audun Rikardsen at Arctic University of Norway, the paper covers the marine distribution of Atlantic salmon and gives new important knowledge on some of the major environmental factors that influence the distribution and other behaviour of the salmon. Data was sampled by tagging salmon with pop-up satellite archival tags. Post-spawned salmon was tagged when they migrated to the ocean from seven European areas in Norway, Denmark, Ireland, Spain and Iceland. Maiden North American salmon was also captured and tagged at sea at West Greenland.

The salmon tagged in Iceland was tagged in spring 2011 by Johannes Sturlaugsson at the research company Laxfiskar. Johannes used pop-up satellite archival tags (PSATs) to map the ocean distribution of post-spawned salmon from river Laxa in Adaldal NE - Iceland.
